A new $94 million design/build bridge was planned to connect downtown West Palm Beach to the barrier islands. This construction realized significant cost savings and improved performance using Post Grouting of Drilled Shafts. The designed bridge spans 1700 feet with a bascule span over the Intracoastal waterway and is supported on 108 post grouted, 5-foot diameter, and drilled shafts up to 120 feet in length. The use of post grouting allowed a shaft length reduction of 25 to 35 feet in the sandy soil.

Besides post grouting, AFT also performed Mini-SID and CSL testing on all drilled shafts. Furthermore, the load test program consisted of two 5,000-ton STATNAMIC™ load tests. AFT has truly been key in the construction of this signature bridge, which is one of the most challenging drilled shaft locations in the country.
